Gynecomastia in Dallas, TX
About Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is the medical term used for enlarged male breasts. It is a condition that can create a female-like chest look due to abnormally growing breast tissue. In many cases, gynecomastia is related to an underlying hormonal issue. This condition can also be due to certain medications, steroids, marijuana use, obesity, or genetics. Males with this issue typically feel self-conscious, especially in circumstances where the upper body and chest are seen such as at the pool or in the gym. Dallas, TX plastic surgeons Dr. David G. Genecov, Dr. Carlos Raul Barceló and Dr. Huay-Zong Law offer male breast reduction surgery for men who have gynecomastia. This surgical procedure has high success rates and is considered one of the more popular cosmetic procedures for men at Sage Plastic Surgery.
Ideal Candidates
Male breast reduction surgery is a procedure for men who have enlarged breasts that cannot be reduced with a healthy lifestyle or exercise and diet. If you feel bothered by the appearance of your chest and are physically healthy, you may benefit from gynecomastia surgery. Teenagers may also benefit from gynecomastia surgery; however, a secondary procedure may be warranted later during adulthood if abnormal breast tissue continues to form. During your first appointment, treatment considerations will be given and may include the possibility of undergoing surgery to repair the condition.
Surgical Technique
Liposuction is generally used during surgery for gynecomastia. With the patient safely under general anesthesia, liposuction is applied to remove excess pockets of fat from the chest wall. Usually, a remaining mds of breast tissue is removed from the incision aroudn the nipple. Next, any skin showing laxity will be removed to create a more tightened appearance, and then the areola and nipple will be placed into a proper position. Once the fat and loose skin have been removed, the existing skin will be tightened. In the vast majority of cases, the incision is only around the nipple and areola complex. In large weight loss patients, more extensive incisions may be required.
What To Expect
Following gynecomastia treatment, your chest will be secured with a medical garment to help control bruising and swelling. In advanced cases where a reconstructive method was used, a drainage tube may be placed to assist with fluid. The results following male breast reduction surgery are immediately noticeable and most patients are extremely satisfied with the physical change. The incisions made during treatment take several weeks to heal and scarring is usually barely seen. With your enhanced chest, you can engage in exercise and strength training, complementing the end results.
