Ideal candidates are men and women who have excess skin that resides on their mid and upper back. Generally, patients who undergo this procedure have lost a significant amount of weight, but this procedure can also be performed on patients who simply desire a slimmer figure. Typically, you are an ideal candidate if:

• You are already at or near your goal weight
• Have great skin elasticity
• Are in overall good health

Prior to your procedure, our plastic surgeons will perform a full exam and mark the areas that will be trimmed. Once a customized treatment plan is created, your procedure will be scheduled. An upper back lift is performed under general anesthesia and is considered an outpatient procedure. Generally, incisions will be made across the mid or upper back from one side to the other and on the sides of the chest. The excess skin and tissue will then be removed and the skin will be tightened and sutured. For those who have lost an extreme amount of weight, as much as 8 – 10 inches of skin may be removed for a slimmer appearance. The procedure usually takes 1 – 2 hours.

After the procedure, a compression bra or chest strap will be carefully placed to help hold and protect the surgical area. Discomfort and tightness is normal but these symptoms will reside after a few weeks. Although optimal recovery usually takes 6 – 8 weeks, the result is a tighter, slimmer back that is toned and smooth. 

Since incisions are made across the back, scarring will be visible. For female patients, scarring can be easily concealed with a bra and male patients can cover their scar with a T-shirt.
